The Photography of Astrid Kruse Jensen

Astrid Kruse Jensen is a photographer from Denmark who specialises in night photography where, through carefully working on the play between darkness and artificial light, she captures the mysteriously unreal. Kruse Jensen said of her night photography technique: “In recent years, most of my work has been carried out at night. This is due to the fact that, at night, I can manipulate and interpret the surroundings while the photograph is being taken. I can underexpose or over-emphasize certain areas of the picture”.

Astrid Kruse Jensen, a prolific photographer who has filled up more than a memory card so far, presented photographs of Iceland’s geothermically heated pools in the 2006 Hypernatural series. As the photos are taken at night, the pools are absent of people. The ripples in the water and the absence of people convey to the viewers a feeling of emptiness and silence. The artificial sources of light appear to come from another world, and the overall sense conveyed is that the pools have a life of their own once night descends.
