The Photography of Astrid Kruse Jensen

February 21, 2012 11:28am

Astrid Kruse Jensen is a photographer from Denmark who specialises in night photography where, through carefully working on the play between darkness and artificial light, she captures the mysteriously unreal. Kruse Jensen said of her night photography technique: “In recent years, most of my work has been carried out at night. This is due to the fact that, at night, I can manipulate and interpret the surroundings while the photograph is being taken. I can underexpose or over-emphasize certain areas of the picture”.

Astrid Kruse Jensen, a prolific photographer who has filled up more than a memory card so far, presented photographs of Iceland’s geothermically heated pools in the 2006 Hypernatural series. As the photos are taken at night, the pools are absent of people. The ripples in the water and the absence of people convey to the viewers a feeling of emptiness and silence. The artificial sources of light appear to come from another world, and the overall sense conveyed is that the pools have a life of their own once night descends.

Using MR16 LED Lighting in Hallways

February 14, 2012 4:55pm

Hallways aren’t considered rooms in our homes and thus don’t usually get a lot of attention. But, if you want a hallway to remain functional while still adding to your home’s dynamic, then you will need to light it properly. A few MR16 LED spotlights are ideal for hallways because they last for so long and provide light without consuming a lot of energy. This means that you can leave the MR16 LED lights on for longer periods of time, such as overnight, without worrying about consuming too much power but still not having to trip and fall if you wake up in the middle of the night fumbling for the light switch!

The simplest way to use a MR16 LED in the hallway is to put it into an overhead light fixture. However, this isn’t so creative. If you use a very high lumen (brightness) MR16 LED from just one spot, then it can also make a glaring effect where one area is highly illuminated and other others dark. Instead, get a track lighting setup for the MR16 LED. Shine the lights on the walls (such as one portraits or artwork) instead of the floor and you will have a fantastic, dynamic effect in your hallway.

Are LED Bulbs Worth the Cost?

February 14, 2012 10:47am

A B22 LED bulb is going to cost you about 20 pounds – which is more than 15x the cost of a standard incandescent bulb. People generally switch over the B22 LED in order to save money. So, it is worth exploring how much you money these bulbs will really save you on your electricity bill.

A single 100 watt incandescent bulb will produce light for about 5,000 hours of light. By contrast, a B22 LED bulb will produce light for about 50,000 hours. So, if you calculate the cost of a B22 LED versus an incandescent bulb per 1000 hours of light, you end up with the B22 LED costing about .30 and the incandescent costing about .16 (assuming that the incandescent costs about .80). With just these calculations, the B22 LED is still more expensive than the incandescent. But, once you start factoring in the energy saving potential, then you quickly recoup the additional costs. Best of yet, only the B22 will actually help you save money in the long run by saving on your electric bill.

Most Risky Trucking Route

February 6, 2012 10:40am

An estimated 300 people die on the stretch of road from La Paz to Coroico in Bolivia each year. It is a notorious route for just how dangerous it is to manuoevre. Less than 50 miles in length, the stretch is covered with the wrecks of vehicles that perished on the route as well as many stone cairns in respect for those who had died there. Though the road poses so many threats to truck safety, both buses and heavy trucks continue to navigate their way around the hair pin curves and deadly abysses, an extremely dangerous drive indeed.

One has to truly have a head for heights and nerves made of steel to be able to drive the stretch of road in question in a truck. Work is almost complete on a different and safer route and then truck drivers need not put their lives at risk. Another extremely dangerous route to drive is the road from Manali to Leh in India, a route which involves hair pin turns atop the Himalayan peaks.
